Name: Brian Parker Reed
DOB: June 25, 1980
Instrument: keyboards, percussion, tin whistle, didgeridoo, vocals
How did you join the band? I suppose it started when I was invited to move in as a college roommate with Jason and our original bassist Joe Eiden while the band was called Micky Finn. They needed the extra roommate and I didn't want to pass up the chance to live in the farmhouse they found on 75 acres. I moved in early over the summer and started religiously playing a set of congas that were left at the house. They offered me the chance to sit in on some rehearsals and I began offering suggestions on how to compose some of the material...our ideas seemed to mesh well and I guess things just fell into place...
How did you get involved in what you play? When I joined the band I had only been playing percussion for a few months. Since the basic structure of the band was already in place I saw the opportunity to add additional sounds that weren't always common in most of the current singer-songwriter based material I've heard. I've always felt that I could learn simple melodies and textures on a variety of instruments that could add to the band in a big way. That search has led me to the sonic odds and ends you hear like the tin whistle and didgeridoo, as well as more of the keyboard work that I've been doing while being mentored by Daniel Clarke.
What are your influences? I've tried to keep as open an ear as possible and will usually spend a few weeks at a time with a particular artist that relates to the type of music I'm currently working with. A lot of the world influences I try and add come from groups like Baka Beyond, while textures and phrases can come from piano players like Sumny Clarke and Brad Mehldau, as well as vocalists like Jeff Buckley and horn players like Roy Hargrove. I think that if you open yourself up enough you can take something good from almost anything...
